How we score stocks

Every stock gets about 25 checks on its reported financials. A check earns 1 or 2 points by how much it says about the quality of the company, and the share of points earned becomes a score from 0 to 5 stars.

Profitability

Return on equity, return on assets against the industry, and years of consecutive profit.

Growth

Earnings per share over 5 years, last year's earnings growth against its own trend and the industry, and revenue growth.

Financial health

Liquidity, debt to equity and its trend, debt and interest coverage, or cash runway for loss-making companies. Banks and insurers get their own checks.

Valuation

P/E against the market and the industry, P/B against the industry, the Graham number and the PEG ratio.

Dividends

Yield against other dividend payers, stability and growth of the dividend, and a payout ratio covered by earnings.

What is the StockSummer fundamental score?

A rating from 0 to 5 stars built from about 25 checks on profitability, growth, financial health, valuation and dividends. Each check is worth 1 or 2 points by how much it says about the quality of the company; the score is the share of points a stock earns.

Where does the data come from?

Company profiles, annual and quarterly financial statements and end-of-day prices come from EOD Historical Data. Statements are refreshed every quarter and prices after every trading day.

What does annualized mean on a stock page?

When the current fiscal year is not finished, income statement and cash flow figures are scaled from the quarters reported so far to a full year, so they can be compared with past years. They are replaced by the annual report once it is published.

Is the score a recommendation to buy or sell?

No. The score summarizes reported financials so you can compare companies quickly. It does not know about news, management or the outlook of a business, so use it as a starting point for your own research.
